That was the first thing I said when I heard this album, Its no news that J Cole almost signed Kendrick even though they were both up and coming, J Cole who produced some of Kendrick song way back especially HiiPower said that he almost signed the good Kid.
Looking at the latest signee JID now, how he sounds and his genius, I'd say he got his wish.
The
voice the flows and all reek of the golden boy of Compton and I know it isn’t good
to label the artist who is on his own independent and distinct but when you look
at Omen, Lute, Bas, Cozz, they all have this J Cole effect (horn, and preachy music) that makes their music almost alike sound like the South Carolina king,
From beginning the song Doo Wop sounds like Kendrick Lamar Wesley’s
Theory and they both have the same message that every one(nigga) is a star.
What a way to start an album.
Moving into the album we are reminded with
that voice and funkiness which is only unique to Kendrick Lamar, the use of his
alliterations like “I swear I swore on your graves” are things peculiar only to
the son of Kendrick. In General he introduces us with skits in between songs
which is something the Dreamville aren't mostly known for. "Never" also have switching
of beats and punchlines that have you putting this album on repeat. with funny lines like “Ball so
hard I got hernia”
Ededdheddy is my personal favourite and with the beat and
the flow is just coo and the chorus
“Me and two niggas be like Ededdheddy"
D
vision ft Earth Gang is also a cool song sooner you are into Hereditary with
the introduction Now I could be imagine things but I swear my brain called the
girl "Sherane" and in Hereditary he shows his musical talent singing through the beats
All bad is also is also cool reavealing truths like“if I am tryna tell the truth
is all bad” featuring the beautiful voice of Mereba which remind us whether we like it or
not another era might be on us. And with 6lack,JID, Allan Rayman,Saba. talking about 6lack 8701 is also a cool where the two youngster let it all out on burning like 8701
Overall A very good album
Rating: 4/5
Best song : Underwear, Somebody,Ededdheddy, Allbad and
finally all of them
On a ending note, Maybe he will add the much needed funkiness in the not so bad but could be boring horn, piano known Dreamville. As for the throne I'd say he is on his way, because one can't deny his genius and his rap style like a combustible mixture of Kendrick and Vince Staples. and i am a huge fan, Say what you will about my antonomasia
For me its welcome J.I.D
the Kendrick of Dreamville
