Growing up i was quite inquisitive and a little precarious, i made a habit of trying to read everything I lay my eyes on, Be it the small sausage roll written under the brand name Gala or the big billboards some i couldn't pronounce but not the ones that advertised the second thing i was joyfully being ambidextrous with, traveling home for Christmas- which was Loco malt, The two things that made my day back when Goody Goody and Short Cake were the thing, I need you if you can to visualize the year 2000 Christmas would be coinciding with a wedding and I was reading, mulching and watching the cars flash the term i used in describing the zooming disappearance of cars beside me, seconds before picking out and pointing out the complete strangers who were driving my cars, sucking the last dregs of the not wanting to finish, it coincided with the end of our praise and worship section of music played from my uncle's Mercedes Benz 180 stereo, apparently God had forgiven us for not praying before embarking on the journey as we took off very early,
Suddenly something familiar quicked in, a soft, cha cha cha reverbing the dominant bass guitar that went tu dum dum dum tu tum dum dum after the mesmerizing intro, it spoke,
suffer suffer for world amin,, enjoy for heaven amin So beautiful so well timed, even at the timing so elegant, Now that i think about it, God would not only forgive but partake in this almost ironical blasphemy. it was wonderful, as a boy my first cue was the Amin, Amin i repeated until i fell in love with words like ...miliki and imam dey for mecca, abishop dey for roomu.... I just sang along, and enjoy it. even though I didn't understand the lyrics of the song, or did i?
Fast forward a decade and some years later i am in a Religion class in university being purge off the potions and medications of organized religion feeling kind of empty and dropped all hope for the cult of smell, sounds and sight guess who came with arms open wide for a true opium, the perfect lens to which to see Nigeria specifically and the world generally with, Fela, with the album Shuffering and shmiling. and till date i never grew out of it.
I don't need to go into his wonderful and stellar background being related to icons regardless of him being one himself, he shares blood with the female independence pioneer of Nigeria, a Nobel Laureate, A Distinguished Doctor, and Father to two Wonderful sons who carried his cross after his demise. Fela is everything to me, He opened my eyes to the vice of society, the foolishness of Nigeria's Democracy some 30 years after, The Slave mentalism we pass almost genetically and his music transcended my mind above those shackles and for that I am very grateful.
That is the kind of music this phenom made and they are still relevant till date, Fela possessed an enchantment that was eternally mesmerizing, with a song like Power Show, He diagnosed Nigerians of bullying syndrome and slaving mental-ism that they still battle till date, Fela cursed us with his songs we have never and can never break out of his spell, In Awe and joyfully so, I found Fela's undisturbed discography in this blog with all the links intact HERE - In the Blog of Francisco Aguas.
I want to thank him so much for keeping a complete discography like this perfect for a long time, because I have found this blog for more than a year now and the links are still perfect,
For me Fela blazed the trail of Nigerian music in such a way that no other artist have been able to rival in terms of artistry, persona, beliefs and ideals, and still fought for a mind slavery that was imposed on us by our own government. He was an Extraordinary Man but Man nonetheless.
