Layman Jazz: The Music of Kenny G

 

Some people refer to them as Anti Jazz or Not jazz music,  Essentially it contains the single extended take of the horn to makes a ballad, daubed as a mood sentimental or a mood for love, and the critics are not fooled. 

But for the neonate the only time a person would first give full attention to an instrument only soundtrack would be the solemn singular horns of Kenny G's Forever in Love, and it was mainstream, it was digestible, easy, simple.

And they also point the same accusing fingers at Eric Dolphy whose Out There record and ending to Far out It's Magic carry some of that one pitch train stop that critics couldn't classify as Jazz.
Mad Richter have tried to explain the rationale behind simplifying it a little or watering down to the common man, a try to remove music from the hands of snubs liquefying classical music to the majority with the SLEEP album. 

Let's reach more minds, It's more gospel that way, maybe then they will have the confidence to delve.
I call it jazz, I'd call it Layman Jazz you don't expect a lot of these Gen Z to understand Unit structures by Cecil Taylor (I still don't..) but Flamenco sketches could be rather easy to give to a person assured.

And it's partly Kenny G's fault, it hard to see a picture of him online where he doesn't look a bit pretentious, The man was on every album cover (you get the feeling he could break a cat smile at a moment's notice). But he made wonderful feel good and night music. But they call it smooth Jazz, Kenny G, Carla Bley et. al... it's jazz lubricant to say the least and this amazing website has his entire discography with working links, I was breathless.
