SHOP AS THE MODERN DAY PRISON IN NIGERIA

A little while people decided that it is imperative that they have in a way of doubling income or to sate their avarice a shop, fill it with junks, plastic, wares and baubles and sit there unhappily as a way of wasting the day, we might blame the recent economic downturn, but you might also blame a simple lack of family planning or plain old greed.
They become prisoners, to foodstuffs, prisoners to plastics, prisoner to cloth, prisoners to useless things and these things hinder them from ever truly becoming humans beings, they become droned slaves in a box. I know that for many their shop is their only means of survival, and this article also posits even for you a way of being, in which during the dead time of sitting quietly in a shop you can read, watch a movie, a documentary rather than face space unhappy or impulsively call at every stranger that walks by in a bid to sell what another shop just beside you is also selling.
Even though you don’t have any other source of income, remember to find time as you stay in the shop to travel, to be, to also close the shop sometime and go somewhere, anywhere for life itself is futility in motion. For if you understand that everything in life is greed unto waste, you should also do well to question that which collects money from you, (e.g. children, ambitions, and unnecessary things in the name of civilization) maybe your toil will be reduced and your life will become fuller.

Some people will open their shop the whole 365 days of the year without any day for rest or contemplation which is very wrong. Do you know that you are 100 times more richer than your grandfather ever was, why then are you so unhappy? (greed). People need to draw a line between making money and actually living, the balance is the most important thing in life,
If you make money find time to also enjoy the money,  The Home economics of it is as simple as -
Don’t give birth to more than one child, at most two children, send them all to public schools as western education doesn’t guarantee job in today’s Nigeria, use the money you would have wasted as school fees to properly feed them, clothe and train them into proper human beings with kindness
You also should make time to travel and explore the country, Try new food, see new places, take photographs of the places, come back with tales and experience, live a more fuller life, rather than imprisoning yourself all year round in a shop of unhappiness,
The funny thing is many of them sell plastic drinks (Bigi Cola, 7up e.t..c) and they stay beside each other trying to sell the same wares to the same set of people passing by, some might even accost you as you pass them by and when you tell them you are not buying anything they go as far as insulting you for riling them up and giving them false hope, as if they know if you have purchasing power or not.
And who makes more from this ignorance, your Pastors, Imams and spiritual daddies who sell “concentrated water”, amulet and soaps for increasing sales and patronages, so if you get to all these shop early enough you see the seller splashing in cupped hands some drops of water around the nooks and crannies of their shop muttering in-audibles to themselves, just so that they can have enough money (greed) to buy car (waste)
All that is lacking is just simple home economics, If you have one child sent to public school, you save a whole lot on school fees, you stay in a small rented apartment, take time to relax on weekends, spend more time with your family, spend according to your pocket, you will find yourself able to manage the little funds you have, sometimes in these shop some people go as far as months without seeing a single customer, whey not close the damn thing and go and rest at home.
You spend transport fare,to imprison yourself in an unhappiness and the government and other officials hound you still collect stupid levies from you, Ask yourself are you really gaining or losing?
If you look at the things they sell, the  maximum gain is probably 100 naira and for it, some will shout randomly at the top of their voice,, ulcerating their larynx,,  give them selves headache and for what one stupid child somewhere, one house that you want to build, one ambition or greed.

If you know the uselessness of ambition you will just try your best to remain calm
And even if the shop is important to your survival, you don’t have to sit there unhappy and looking out of the guarding iron like a prisoner watching every person pass with pity eyes so that they come and buy from you.
You can stay in the shop for 3 hours, in that period, you can read a book, watch a movie, or download an album that you want to listen took or watch a documentary, yes you are in a shop but your mind is set free and you can learn while staying in the shop
And when you are done reading watching or even sleeping  You can go for a walk as long as you have pasted your phone number somewhere for people to call you, you close the shop and go for lunch go and see a particular street or see a friend, come back sleep some more, read some more and close around 5 to go home, Anybody that will want to patronize you will call you you don’t’ have to be a prisoner as far as you don’t sell the same thing others are also selling, where the fear is your not being around automatically make you lose patronage, Live a life that is full rather than sit in a place where all you do  is die inside slow slow, Life is just too short and too meaningless for you to live that way.

And I know thing are hard in this country, but if you practice minimalism you might not find it as hard, I only have 5 of each clothing, no television, don’t have a car( could afford one), and eat or twice  a day(albeit very healthy) I go for long walks come back watch a documentary, movie or sleep. Visit friends and family, go to work and travel once every 3 months I pick a village in an unknown state and just spend a week there I come back refreshed and continue with my life, I believe most people just need to seek  and find a balance in their life As Tyler Durden once said in the movie Fight Club, the things you own end up owning you a lot will still change as I get  older but I assure you possession is a scam. So I don’t allow anything affect me, I flow like the tide and never try to be stringent in any belief  system for all is acquired and nothing is really here.
For you who already have a source of income, you don’t have to imprison your wife also in a shop as a way of doubling the family income or restricting her freedom. (yes, she’s in a shop but is it productive)
Reduce your want, allow your wife learn new things, photography, design, horticulture, cooking, learn new languages, documentaries or even writing there are so many things better than putting someone in a shop with a plastic chair and 500 pack of Bigi Apple
You see the person crouched over trying to sleep while hanging their necks dozing off after watching one stupid and un-educative Nollywood drivel on YouTube, What a waste of a life, if you ask me
You could own the shop, set a time table in the shop where you will be around let your customers know that he stays in the shop from 9 - 12 goes off for lunch and come back from 2 - 4 and closes around 4 or 5, Your customers who are interested will plan their time according to your schedule, or call your phone number, but you also cancel going to the shop in the weekends and holidays,
You reduce the things that can increase your avarice things like children, possession, unnecessary sympathies, fake life and impulse buys.

Some of these shop now even include churches, as many people now second as Pastors after doing their jobs they go and open one church by joining two shops together so that they can double their hustle after working in the weekdays they still be working in church as Pastors trying to earn money from unsuspecting Nigerians who are seeking to buy hope, that’s why you see so many churches in Nigeria many of them are businesses set up solely for the aim of making money
Before you venture into  a business make sure it is not what other are selling, but because of the get rich quick mentality of most Nigerians they don’t usually want to do other form of business except the one that they feel is trending or in vogue, they don’t actually take time to study their environment and see what is lacking and in providing that create a very essential business rather than selling the same wares just because one person opened beside you and seems to be “selling”. This is also one of the reasons why many of them are wasting money building houses thinking that house is an investment, It is Not.

If your philosophy is people centered you will never run out of business and thees business don’t have to hold you prisoner and you will find fufilment in many of them, I listed some businesses that I feel are lacking in Nigeria, I looked around and I think they are essential and don’t make of the owner a prisoner. Examples are:
A park: buy a land, plant stem trees and carpet grass construct pallet chairs for people to relax and enjoy nature,  if you charge 100 for every entry you might  make a 1000 naira per day (You don’t have to be there) A wedding, burial in your park will fetch you the same amount another person who rented a house for a year in a week, if you get 10 weddings a year  that is the equivalent of 10 years rent for a man who thinks house is an investment.

A swimming pool hall, just employ a life guard, buy a house of compound and build a swimming pool, and we don’t have many of those in Nigeria (especially for the old)  It doesn’t have to be a hotel, just a pool for old people to come and do exercises or young people to cool off, you could also include a bath house, A plot of land ought to do (Calculate sales by entry fee of 500 naira daily)

A library built in houses, that are either bought or rent can offer succor to people tired of staying at home ( a per session or per day fee can be affixed as a way of getting money) You don’t have to junk your library with books (just get an Android Tablet) and create an atmosphere of calm.

A tea house or relaxation hub is another business lacking in Nigeria, Tea houses like the ones in Turkey can also be very cool place for people to hang around, all you need is a house or hall, some chairs an electric kettle and some mugs and you can sell per tea bag ( a little jazz or ambient music) and you will find your crowd.

A studio for painters. Photographers and musicians to do their stuff and craft, they could pay for rent, per entrance and  per percentage for work sold. this can also be a sort of museum for people to come and see the work of other artist and you can engender that by providing them a place to display their works. Charge an entrance fee and percentage for any art or picture sold

A playing space for schools to do inter house sport, advertise your space to them and they pay you per school as many of the mush room schools in Lagos don’t have playing spaces, You could build a park or with race track and advertise these place with the safety guaranteed to schools so that they can do their inter- house sport in your park. 10 schools a year now that’s something

You can open your own Travel Agency like Thomas Cook did in England, there so many people earning a lot of money as salaries in Lagos, Abuja and the likes, they don’t know what to do with the money so they buy cars and build unnecessary houses, and their leaves are always so short (a week or two in the max) they don’t really know places to go, with their security guaranteed so they end up staying in the same place. If you can open a travel agency where you go to all these local villages and get a place that they can vacation to, in Nigeria and even across Africa, make sure your company will guarantee their safety, and ensure that their feeding accommodation is settled  either by road, air or rail for a reasonable fee,  That is a good business

You can build a pet center, for dogs and cats, so that when people are traveling they can drop their cats with you and be assured that they will be taken good care of,  and you can also fill it with puppies and kittens and tel people to come and pet them for free as it will help reduce their blood pressure, their stress and make them happy (for a fee?)

A cheap old people’s home for those who are too busy to take good care for their parent  and for the myriad of schizophrenic patients that roam the streets of Nigeria or sequestered in the villages  people, you can build a rehabilitation center which also serve those who are traumatized and people recovering from addiction

You can open a herb center for studying extinct plants, herbs that are good for man and animals , as many of those knowledge are dying with our parents and grand parents,You could create a study group to go all these villages to go and ask the aged about those old knowledge about herbs, and vernacular medicines and cures for so many of  our diseases everything is not surgery and injection, before they die and taking many of those knowledge with them

You can create a worm farm ( there is none in Nigerian) a farm that help preserve the red wriggler that are beneficial for the and  growth of compost  and worm custard which is very beneficial to a good farmer not interested in the proliferation of chemicals and the management of waste.

Listing business is tasking, but very good if you set your mind to it, It involves you  listing business and services for people in a website or an app, so that people know where they can buy things making it easy for people to locate these thing
Listing Hotel, makes me see or know the hotel I would be renting before traveling to a place, there used to be  a website called Jumia travel where most hotels in Nigeria were listed it’s a shame They took down the website as it was instrumental to my travel to Jos some years back where I budgeted a 1000 naira for hotel per night after seeing that Suzz Palace Hotel Gyel offered at that amount.
The listing of houses for rent will also go a long way for people not for fall victim of bad houses and make a change from the exorbitant amount of money Agencies charge,
School teachers listing is a very important business if you are interested, there are so many mushroom schools in Lagos in need of teachers but they are slave drivers, however there are many unemployed graduates looking for something to do too, If you created a website for the availability of teachers where graduates could register attach the subject they can teach and for the amount of hours they are free and amount they want to be paid, like a profile, the schools can request their service and pay before hand at the agreed price, (either part time or full time) bridging the gap of a lack of teacher and saving the graduate from undue exploitation

You can invest in landscaping and the environment and trash though this business is quite expensive but with the right mindset also lucrative,  an Incentive to trash(e.g 100 naira per 1000 sachet water nylon) will get more people as school children eager to make quick money will clean up their communities inadvertently, the Incentive approach can also apply to environment care, I though of a name Tree up Nigeria where incentive for planting trees will motivate people to become landscape artist, since most Nigerians like to fence their house the emphasis will be on crawling shrubs and stem trees in compounds. This would really help beautify the environment and reduce carbon emission

A basketball court, a squash and tennis court, A play center for children, Youth center are  also businesses lacking in Nigeria, A 200 naira a day basketball court will see a surge in young people interested in the game but more of overweight young adults trying to shed some.

An apiary  A  bird center, Radio station and TV station are also other form of business although they are quite expensive

A business that involves good planning and management but done properly could fetch millions is the business of Chess playing, Let me explain A lot Nigerians claim to know how to play chess, go to universities and set up a competition of chess for a registration fee of 3,000 naira who gets to win 2 million naira (something like SanGatsu No Lion) chances are you will see at least in the numerous universities in Nigeria more than 40,000 people will register. With good planning and a zero mediocrity approach, you could have a multi-million business on your hands. If you can do it twice a year (per semester) Woah..

Churches and Mosques as home economics center where people can learn something  is not more of a business but an innovation these churches and mosques as numerous as they are, are useless most days of the week, they can be used as Home economic center for people to learn simple things like Family planning, How to save money how to practice minimalist living and other things, You could buy Televisions and load in them memory card containing documentaries and how to videos tell the churches to come and collect the  TV from you, so that we can teach the numerous housewives who serve as nothing  but walking wombs that breed illiterate children that serve no purpose to our society.
What is the essence of a population that is ignorant. You can also add adult literacy on Saturdays
Employ the number of unemployed graduates as teachers of home economics to educate women on family planning. These churches and mosques can be download centers for getting New Movies, Documentaries, How to videos and Videos on Home Economics, I mean these buildings are empty 6 days in a week, They can also serve as widows and widowers center where old people can find love again the fact that you are widowed, or old don’t mean that you have to be redacted, teach about the wastage in consumption, cloth buying and their roles as individuals to the planet.

And I know some of my business seem more like humanitarian work than business
But when I see the money wasted on buying cars I ask, why not do some of these things.  For those who waste away in shop why pay a ridiculous amount of money for house rent if you are not going to be there. That’s why you should close around 5pm rather than 8pm or 9pm
Rest, do other things when the business is no longer viable, Just look around your community you see something you can do rather than open a shop and imprison yourself and these business will fetch you better income and make you meet better class of people.
However, It still boils down to population control quality over quantity I say that 90 percent of Nigerians shouldn’t be born in the first place, when you see the amount of young Northern males driving bikes as a source of income, you think about the father that gave birth to them, many of them with 14 children and above serving what purpose, the proliferation of humans that are not educated is a ticking time bomb  waiting to happen, some business are a matter of emergency due to the simple fact that many people gave birth to children that they shouldn’t have, The only thing Europeans have better than us, is that they don’t give birth to children that they don’t need and they focus their business on the people (emphasis on sports) simple home economics.
Let us be wise, let us make the conscious decision not to have too  many children, so that we can live on the little we can afford and find no need for us to damn our lives by retarding and imprisoning ourselves in a shop in pursuance of subsistence. In truth the lesser the people, the fuller the life.
